Tiny & terrific! Sugar Cube Gallery, Hambridge

Fancy a cuppa? That’s one question we never say no to. We’d have been Mrs Doyle’s favourite guests if we’d ever gone to Craggy Island… so when we found tea and art in one place, we knew we were on to a winner!

We’re talking about the Sugar Cube Gallery (the tiniest gallery in Somerset, if not England!) and the lovely guys at Teapot Creative who’ve put it all together.

Sugar Cube describes itself as “Small. White. Square” and although it’s all of those things, it’s a lot more besides! Starting life as a pop up gallery in 2014, it’s now a space dedicated to local artists, sculptors and photographers, where they can exhibit and sell their work on a zero commission basis in a bright, funky little area - and it’s set in a stunning rural location, on Bowdens Farm in Hambridge, near Langport.

If there’s one thing we’ve discovered about Somerset since moving here, it’s that it dances to it’s own tune, so it’s no surprise one of the unique things about Sugar Cube is its' home - in the entrance to a creative design agency!

Director of Teapot Creative, Lizzie Ginby, always wanted her own art gallery. Now she has and for a little space, it packs a mighty punch! As Felix Marsh, Content Co-ordinator at Teapot Creative told us (over tea and many biscuits);

“We didn’t set out to show that small spaces can be great spaces to display art and culture, but that’s what’s happened”

And ain’t that the truth!

Renowned watercolour artist & printmaker, Jackie Curtis, is exhibiting here until March 28th and this year, both Donna Vale and David Smith will also be showcasing their work, along with glass maker Sally Kent - so it’s an exciting line-up.

Design isn’t getting overlooked either, as ‘Tonks’, an apprentice at Teapot Creative explained. They want to put young Somerset designers on the map too, so the guys are hosting a ‘Young Designer of the Year’ competition, with entrants work being exhibited at Sugar Cube. A great reward for any young designer, if you ask us!

Anyway, what’s that 'they' say… Mighty things from little sugar cubes grow (to sort of coin a phrase!!). Well, we’re sure it won’t be too long before Sugar Cube becomes the next big thing, so pop in and have a look around this tiny space for yourself… and explore the rest of Bowdens Farm whilst you’re at it! You’ll certainly get the warmest of welcomes.

Our review in three words: tiny and terrific!
